Education Week 2025/2026: Globalisation and Erosion of Cultural identity: the way forward.
Our school recently celebrated its annual education week on the 1st of February to 6th of February 2026, a vibrant four days event designed to celebrate learning, creativity, and community engagement. This year’s theme; ” Globalization and Erosion of Cultural Identity: The way forward” focus on understanding how global influence impacts our cultural heritage and exploring ways to preserve our traditions.
Day 1: Sunday 1st February 2026 Thanksgiving mass in the community parish, St Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Mgbele, Oguta LGA, Imo State. The week began with a heartfelt Thanksgiving service at the local community parish as mentioned above. Students, staff, and parents gathered to offer prayers of gratitude for the opportunity to learn and grow. The service emphasised the importance of faith, unity, and community support in shaping well-grounded individuals. It also set a reflective tone for the week, reminding everyone of the balance between embracing modernity and preserving cultural roots. After the service, a group photograph was taken by the principal, Sr Mary Chika Dibia, alongside the students and our amiable staff.
Day 2: Tuesday, 3rd February, 2026, principal's address on the theme. The second day featured the principal's address, where she highlighted the impact of globalisation on cultural values and traditions. She encouraged students to appreciate and promote heritage while responsibly engaging with global ideas. Her speech inspired students to think critically about the influence of global media, technology, and trends on local customs, stressing the importance of cultural pride and identity. After the principal's speech, a round table discussion of each class took place, with their representatives being the facilitators and moderators, and group pictures were also taken.
Day 3: Thursday, February 5th, 2026, spelling bee and entrepreneurship acquisition. Day 3 was filled with intellectual and practical challenges. The spelling bee tested students mastering language and literacy skills, promoting precision and confidence. Concurrently, an entrepreneur skill acquisition program exposed students to basic business principles, creativity, and problem-solving. This initiative aims to equip students with skills for safe reliance, reflecting the school's commitment to producing not just academically competent but practically skilled individuals. Students learned how to bake cake, which made their interest grow rapidly in making pastries, etc. Afterwards, group pictures were taken.
Day 4: Friday, 6th February 2026 was a cultural day and creative drama. The final day was a spectacular celebration of cultural identity. Students donned their traditional attire, showcasing their diversity and the richness of local cultures. The highlight was the creative drama performed in Igbo, which depicted stories emphasising moral values, cultural heritage, and challenges posed by globalisation. These colourful displays reinforced the importance of embracing one's roots while navigating a globalised world.
In conclusion to the education week program, it successfully blended with the reflection, intellectual engagement, skill development and cultural celebration by addressing the theme of globalisation and erosion of Cultural Identity: The way forward. The school reminded students that while we can benefit from global advancement, our cultural heritage remains a cornerstone of identity. The evidence concluded with a renewed commitment to preserving traditions, fostering creativity, and preparing students to face a globalised world without losing their cultural essence.
